This online training certification course presents an overview of steel erection in construction work. It details the risks involved in working on or near steel erections, as well as how different environment and job stages impact these safety hazards. Structural steel training topics include the design decisions that help prevent and isolate safety hazards and key practices to reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

The construction industry is inherently dangerous, with its workers suffering a higher fatality rate than any other industry. Steel and iron workers have the second highest rate of on-the-job injury among construction workers, second only to roofers.

Who This Course is For

Case Study: In 2013, there were two separate cases of structural collapse due to improper column anchoring. In both cases, the anchor bolts were not installed properly by the concrete contractor and were later cut off and repositioned. While it is possible to perform this kind of change safely, neither of the contractors in either case consulted the structural engineer on the project for advice or approval, and in both cases the modifications were done improperly. In these cases, the unapproved changes to the anchor bolts caused 50-foot and 60-foot steel columns to come crashing down suddenly and unexpectedly, which would have crushed anyone who had been in the way. Fortunately, no one was injured in either case, but the potential for injury and death was present and avoidable.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
