Mold is a fungus that breaks down organic materials, such as downed trees, fallen leaves, and dead animals. Exposure to mold can cause allergic and irritant symptoms, such as runny nose, red eyes, asthma attacks, and localized skin infection. When mold makes its way indoors in a moist environment, it gradually damages building materials and furnishing.

Who This Course is For

Case Study: For nine years, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition aired in the United States. The show focused on families in need, and worked with local volunteers as well as builders, designers, and their crews to remodel or rebuild a home over the course of a week. In one specific instance, a Kokomo, Indiana, family was selected for an episode. The family had an immunocompromised daughter who, after meeting and becoming friends with another girl who had leukemia, raised over $35,000 for the American Cancer Society. However, the family home of the immunocompromised little girl, due to the location and the way their home was built, collected water that led to mold growth. Family members experienced many negative health effects, such as polyps and severe asthma attacks, and were restricted to the upstairs portion of the deteriorating home. When they tore down the old house, the family was instructed to only hold onto items that had sentimental value, due to the nature of mold growth.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Labor, is charged with the enforcement of safety and health conditions of workers through the use of regulations published in the Code of Federal Regulations. OSHA regulations are published in Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Part 1910 covers general industry regulations, while 1926 is designated for construction industry standards.

OSHA does not specifically regulate mold; however, there are several standards that apply in different situations. Employers must protect the safety and health of employees involved in mold prevention and remediation according to OSHA's General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910), Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926), and the General Duty Clause of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act.
