This online certification course outlines the Cal/OSHA Heat Illness Prevention regulations. You will learn to identify heat illness, describe first aid measures to respond to heat illnesses, and review best practices to prevent these hazards. Also covered are employer responsibilities in the areas of the provision of water, availability of shade, heat wave procedures, emergency response procedures, acclimatization, and training and prevention plan requirements.

Employees who work in high-temperature settings, whether indoor or outdoor, are at risk of dehydration and overheating-serious and potentially life-threatening conditions. Every employee should know the risks and symptoms of heat illness and elevated body temperature as well as how to prevent and address them.

Who This Course is For

Case Study: In August 2012, an electrician was working at a jobsite in Palm Desert, California. He was running a trencher, digging a 2-foot-deep trench using a shovel, and installing conduits. On the first day, he worked alone, spending about six hours working under direct sunlight. He had a coworker on the second day and again worked under the sun. At approximately 1:30 p.m. on the second day, the employee died as a result of a heat-related illness.

The unfortunate employee had not been provided with training on the prevention of heat illness. He had also been allowed to start working outdoors for about six hours during the shift without undergoing any acclimatization.
